To create a Grid publication certain items are necessary. First of all at least 2 InDesign pages are needed. The first one is a Master page and the second one is an Object page. In a Grid publication the Object pages will be placed on the Master page. The final item necessary is an Excel page which has a unique Key column.
Once that is done the Excel file is ready to be uploaded. To do so click on the Excel button, number 2 in the zoomed in part of the image. Upload the desired Excel file and press ‘Save’. To verify your data click on number 1 in the zoomed in part of the image.
The Object pages do need Datafields. Those Datafields need to be exactly the same as in the Excel file. Otherwise the template will not ‘understand’ where to get the correct data from. It would be easiest to replicate the order in the Datafields from the Excel file. Once that is done link the datafields to the corresponding places on the template. Once that is done click on the top left on ‘Template’ and select ‘Save&Export’.
Note: do not link ‘Key’ to the template, only enter that name of the datafield.
Creating a Grid template is no different than any other template. When selecting a publication type choose ‘Grid publication’. ‘Template’ should have your Master template, ‘Allowed grid templates’ should have your Object templates. After you have selected your Object template click on the ‘+’ button.
